Gotham - Season 1 Episode 14: The Fearsome Dr. Crane
Gotham is the origin story of the great DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. James Gordon and Harvey Bullock are assigned to track down the killer of Thomas and Martha Wayne. The story behind Commissioner James Gordon';;;;;s rise to prominence in Gotham City in the years before Batman';;;;;s arrival. Along the way, Gordon becomes involved with Gotham';;;;;s Mafia families and associates including gangster Fish Mooney, Don Carmine Falcone, and Italian mob boss Salvatore Maroni. Eventually, Gordon is forced to form an unlikely friendship with Bruce, one that will help shape the boy';;;;;s future in becoming the Batman.

Gotham's status quo may be actively changing, but for now, "The Fearsome Dr. Crane" just feels like a skittish step back.

"The Fearsome Dr. Crane" was clever, creepy, funny on purpose, deliberately disturbing (instead of thoughtlessly so), and graced with an excellent villain-of-the-week.

This was a good episode, but nothing spectacular, with some decided holes in the plot this time around that was pretty noticeable.

Here, Gotham demonstrates a level of self-awareness I never realized the show was capable of.

The main plot, then, was a deftly crafted Gotham procedural with a memorable baddie and a sense of macabre fun... but there was so much more to savour as well.

The bottom-line result is that Gotham has evolved into a more consistently engaging show, even if some of its conventions might eventually get a bit repetitive

This week was about coming back to earth, and coming to terms with the show's strengths and weaknesses. Gotham is a far cry from a great drama, but it has decent building blocks that could one day get it to that echelon.

You can not keep doing this, Gotham! You can not keep taking all the names of super villains we know, swapping out the first name and saying it's their cousin!

There's not much in the way of his family history or how Dr. Jonathan Crane came to take on the terrifying [Scarecrow] mantle. With the character's introduction on Gotham, that will finally be made clear.
