It takes a special kind of skill to craft a memorable character, especially a villain, and Outlander may have just created one of the best new characters on television this year in their latest episode, 'The Garrison Commander'.

Tonight's episode of Outlander is the best of the series so far. It delivered an intense story as well as emotional and profound performances.

Indeed, it's a quality hour of television: artful directing, strong writing, and rousing performances by both Caitriona Balfe and Tobias Menzies. Especially Menzies, who's so far only been able to showcase slivers of what he's capable of.

The episode redeems itself at the end, with the news that Claire can solve all her problems by marrying a Scotsman. Hmm, gee, who ever could that be, ya think?

If the next two episodes of Outlander are as tense as "The Garrison Commander" was I won't have any finger nails left. That was a fantastic hour of television. And what a showcase for Tobias Menzies.
