What we have just witnessed was, hands down, the best episode of The Deuce yet. By a lot. Titled "Au Reservoir," it's funny, scary, sad, sexy and entertaining as hell from start to finish. How did this so-so show get so damned good so suddenly?

You cannot start fresh without saying goodbye, and "Au Reservoir" paints farewells and changes in similar tones: With subtlety and minimal explanation in some instances; with suddenness and violence in others.

This week's episode is notable in that it doesn't break much from the steady evolution of the previous six hours. And yet, the episode makes you realize that everything has changed, perhaps more dramatically than it might have seemed.

Though the episode seems built like a vintage Pelecanos Episode, it doesn't turn out that way at all. Even in a world as dark and sad as this one, The Deuce allows for the hope that occasionally, things can go okay.

What makes "Au Reservoir" the best episode of The Deuce so far isn't the depiction of a newly liberated time, but rather how it honestly captures its characters' experiences within that time.
