Still The King is a comedy series about doing all the wrong things… for all the right reasons, following Vernon Brownmule, aka 'Burnin' Vernon,' a scandal-ridden, washed-up, one-hit-wonder who was kicked out of country music, only to emerge 20 years later as the second best Elvis impersonator around.

By attempting to have fun with his image as a fading star, [Cyrus is] at least displaying a fraction of self-awareness. What's not on display is any indication that he's been hiding a talent for comedy all these years.

If you must watch one show about a failed Elvis impersonator, make it Still the King. As a TV critic, that's my one charitable deed for the year -- OK, maybe the decade.

When even cable outlet CMT wants in on the original, scripted series game, you know #PeakTV has gone too far, especially when the result is the unfunny, cheap-looking Still the King.

TV critics above all should approach everything with an open mind. In that respect, this one lands somewhere between a pleasant surprise and better-than-expected.

There's an amiability to the show that charmed me, to my enormous surprise, and little asides like the local restaurant being called Tepid's Lukewarm Grill help keep everything afloat.
