This is a cute piece of work that coasts largely on the charms of its cast (namely Fillion, although there aren't any serious weak spots) and a colorful, cinematic visual style.

Five minutes in and there was already a shoot-out. I had to rewind my DVR several times to take everything in and now that it's over, I'm still in shock.

Without the light-hearted and even flirty back-and-forth, there's not a whole lot to distinguish Castle from any mystery made in the last twenty years - and in fact, there's not much about it that stands out either.

Despite the whimsical mood, Ms. Katic maintains an egregiously flat and chilly affect, performing as though she has been cast in CSI: Kiev. It is too easy to care not an iota whether they get into bed, let alone eventually wind up registering at Tiffany.
