"Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster" left me as giddier as a stoner huffing spray paint in the pale moonlight.

There is just so much to love about Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-monster.

The third episode is not just a welcome improvement but among the best single hours in the entire series, thanks in large part to some very clever writing and directing from Darin Morgan and a hilarious turn from Rhys Darby as Guy Mann.

Finally, this scene sets up one of the episode's strongest self analysis tools: the obstacle of writing mysterious fiction in a world where smartphones exist. All of this happens within like 6 minutes. Amazing.

This episode was one for the true believers, and there are "Easter eggs" throughout.

Now, that's more like it. The return of writer Darin Morgan for "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster" also marks a return to classic The X-Files.

"Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster" is thrillingly alive with people, creatures, and all their wondrous shades of character.

All that said - what a delight. Killer banter, great jokes and such charming performances from Anderson (clearly having a great time) and Duchovny (working hard to give his more serious moments real weight). And the supporting work is great, too.

Though "Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster" is the weakest script Morgan has contributed to the show, it still boasts enough tremendous moments to be one of the biggest TV events of the year.
