The Crimson Field - Season 1
Like all those national wars that have taken place throughout the ages, there is a team of doctors, nurses and volunteers working in a field hospital in front tents during the First World War who are doing their job perfectly. During those wars, there seems to be another daily battle for these doctors and nurses to keep the soldiers well to fight. In spite of all this, the decline in staff makes the hospital more dependent on female volunteers during those wars.

The wartime setting gives The Crimson Field more gravitas than a Downton-style soap but the premiere episode never gets too bleak.

It's a similar mix of highstakes drama and old-fashioned soap, but it's too soon to say if it carries the unexpected bite of [Call the] Midwife.

Although the stories may not stick with the viewer in the way that many quality television dramas tend to do, both the drama involving each individual nurse as well as the soldiers they treat remain entertaining.
