I'd try to figure out other things to say about Saturday's premiere, but good or bad, Saturday Night Live just doesn't offer much to talk about these days.

Harrelson was nothing but solid throughout the following episode, evincing a happy professionalism that, if the writing were better, could have elevated this first show nicely.

SNL's season premiere gave off a same-as-it-ever-was vibe, not exactly encouraging after a lackluster last few seasons.

Thankfully, the episode found its footing - and gave at least one new cast member a chance to shine - after the first commercial break, when the show returned with a cameo-filled debate parody that really, really should have served as the cold open.

Yet the generational gap between this season premiere's host and musical guest is not the strangest choice. It's more what this season premiere chooses to do - or really, not do - with its multi-time host.

"SNL" staged its own trailer of "Downton Abbey" and joked that nothing really happens in the box-office hit. But the same could be said for the blah season opener of "SNL."
