Upon the death of his young daughter, who has been found died mysteriously, Malcom, a great scientist unites up with a group of courageous experts who Wander London, searching for the supernatural creatures that threatens the life of people and chase them. A new season begins with much more suspense, where Malcom returns home to be shocked by finding Vanessa has hunted again.

The second season's first two episodes have laid aside any doubt in my mind of a sophomore slump for this show. If anything, the return from hiatus has shifted "Penny Dreadful" into even higher gear.

It's a gorgeous backdrop that's often a little short on canvas for the story it means to tell. But on the strength of its cast, the beauty of its design, and the sheer joy it gets from its homages, it's the sort of dreadful that's mostly a delight.

Such is the allure of Penny Dreadful, taking these familiar characters from legend-and in my case, a misspent youth obsessed with vintage horror movies-and investing them with unnerving yet ennobling humanity and dramatically compelling desires.

These witches were definitely scarier than other versions we've seen lately. I'm not a fan of witches in general, but I think Penny Dreadful's take is really going to work for me.

Poole is an intriguing evil, at the very least because she makes Logan's series into the rare female-led series not reliant on romance.
