Fargo - Season 1 Episode 01: The Crocodile's Dilemma
In 1996, a manipulative drifter preys upon a small-town insurance salesman in the opener of this adaptation. Deputy Molly Solverson and Duluth police officer Gus Grimly team up to solve a series of murders they believe may be linked to Malvo and Nygaard. Fargo features a new “true crime” story and new characters, all entrenched in the humor, murder and “Minnesota nice” that made the film a classic.

As a reworked version of the Coen Brothers' classic film, the TV Fargo is a funny beast, kind of like watching another, very similar, case unfold in a nearby neighborhood.

What I'm most impressed by, though, is how this episode gets you to identify so thoroughly with Lester-then immediately removes that identification once he kills his wife because she dared insult him.

While the idea of a Fargo TV series may have had many people saying, "Ah jeez," the new FX series has managed to pull off the nearly impossible... The series has captured the essence and the spirit of the film.

The Crocodile's Dilemma" raises intriguing questions, and like any good mystery, by the conclusion of this first episode, we're left craving a second helping.

['The Crocodile's Dilemma'] episode nicely sets the audience up with the suggestion that [Molly's] narrative will gather more momentum now that Lester and Malvo have set everything up.

Billy Bob Thornton is always a pleasure to watch, but the understated mode he's in for this role is perhaps the best use of his particular talents and screen presence.
