About a Boy - Season 1
Will Freeman, as his name suggests, is living a carefree life in San Francisco as a successful songwriter who has just written a hit song that allows him to be lazily unemployed. One day, when Fiona, a needy single mom and her oddly charming 11-year-old son, Marcus, move in next door, Will does not expect that he and the two would form such a close bond.

Boy is often silly, but this cast is just so likable.

Basically, About a Boy has been expertly rigged in Walton's favor... but it can't solve the fundamental issue with any of the actor's shows: he's just not particularly appealing.

If the writers can lighten up [Minnie Driver's] down-in-the-dumps character, this one could be a keeper.

About a Boy easily ranks as the network's best new comedy of the season.

[It] is snappy with some well-observed one-liners.

With Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood) as creator and producer, About a Boy could very well be the next universally appealing family show.
February 20, 2014
About a Boy seems willing to go to contrived lengths to warm the cockles of your heart. But because it comes from a superb TV producer, Jason Katims, the show gets a stay of judgment coming out of the chute.

Solid writing and even sharper delivery (all without an intrusive laugh track) make this one of the season's upper tier freshman comedies.
February 27, 2014
It's interesting to watch Katims bend the half-hour format to his needs rather than the other way around: No other showrunner alive would dare use an extended potty-training scene for anything other than a punch line.

The things that Will finds off-putting are depicted as ick. Funny, my feeling about the show exactly.
