Season 8 returns to a host of new and exciting events. The opening of the season, where there is a plot to assassinate the President of the Islamic Republic in the United Nations building comes to the attention of Jack Bauer. On the other hand, CTU is holding a reporter who is suspected of helping in the killings, while Jack and Chloe begin their own investigations, which can reveal many new events.

The show's writers have repeated themselves so many times that by now even the most generous, most deliriously inventive allegorical reading of the series wouldn't be able to extract much beyond an indecisive libertarian populism.

Fox's 24 is a little creaky getting out of bed to start its eighth season. But once it wakes up, it reminds us that no current TV show is better at action-adventure.
