The film revolves around the adventure of Manolo, a young man is torn between having to complete his familys expectations or following whisperings of the heart. When he is confused to choose the true way for his life, he accidentally embarks on an incredible adventure through three world - where he faces the biggest fear of his own.

The Mexi-centricity is novel and welcome, as is the flirtation with morbidness, but the film overall is filled with the usual trademarks of sub-Pixar animation: glib one-liners, anachronistic pop-culture references, and inspirational cliches.
